This book carried me through Lent without preaching. I loved the selections, and thought at first I'd gotten something that the author was using just to promote his own works, but he included fragments and poems from many poets. Going through a faith crisis right now, and this was a gentle reintroduction to grace and love, along with an opening up to the idea of returning to God.
This Lenten & Easter anthology is not only filled with poetry from Dante, Tennyson, Walter Raleigh, Yeats, Holly Ordway, Seamus Heaney, George Herbert, John Donne, Coleridge, Malcolm Guite and others, but also with each poem, Malcolm Guite has shared his wise and informed insights. He leads us to consider our faith journey. Guide's insights and his poetry reflect his gift and deep understanding of poetry and how poetry can grace faith, awaken our vision, and ultimately deepen our relationship with God, Christ and his church.
Malcolm has put together a beautiful and meaningful Lenten journey. The poetry is exquisite- both those by Rev. Guite and those by other poets-and the meditations are illuminating as well as provocative. This has been one of my favorite Lenten studies eve. Thank you for such a lovely experience, Malcolm Guite!
This is a great collection of poetry and reflections. I'm very much looking forward to using it for this year's Lenten readings, but having already read a handful of the poems in it I can tell I will be reading from it year round.
I read this work through Lent with a group of colleagues. The poems are rich and meaningful, and the commentary is appropriate. At points in the journey, it drug on a bit. Honestly, I’m not sure that the dragging was the book. It is more likely a criticism of my sluggish discipline.
I love poetry but sometimes I am scared by it. What if I can't understand it. Guite adds comments for each poem, most of which are his own, that help you get inside the each poem.. I have loved it.
I enjoyed the selected poems from different poets and the way they were brought together to form a daily journey through Lent and Holy Week.
