I purchased this book because I remember press coverage on the crime and we recently moved to Apple Valley, and I know where all the specific locations are mentioned in the book. In short, it is an interesting read, and, I think, might be more so for someone who knew nothing about it. For me, it just filled in some gaps. I found the writing informative, but a little bland, more like a news narrative in some places. There are photographs, but what jumps out at you is that it suffers from having no maps whatever - with reference to streets, houses, various towns, and no maps to help one with the relative distances and relationships between them. It could have used one or two pages of a map of Ohio with Mt. Vernon on it, a map of the Mt. Vernon area with all the key places mentioned in the book marked, and a map of the Apple Valley area with the houses and establishments mentioned marked and identified. That is a no-brainer. The author could have interviewed far more people who knew Matthew Hoffman, the perpetrator, to get more into his psyche and motivation, but stuck to straight narrative. He was tactful and respectful to the victim in giving enough information to understand the sexual abuse that occurred, without giving salacious details. Generally and interesting and fast read not too long nor too short except where noted above. Recommended if you don't know anything about the crime, or wish to put all the pieces together in terms of events.

I grew up in Knox county but moved away about 15 years ago. When this crime occurred I was constantly checking the news for updates, and took a personal interest because several events unfolded within close proximity to my parent's home.I'm not a reader of true-crime books so I have nothing else to compare to, but I think I understand where some of the criticisms come in on this review board. I will say this book gives a good summarization of events, timelines, and quotes as they pertained to each. For me it was much more helpful than trying to piece together news articles and interviews. However, if you're looking for a thrilling story and deep-digging investigative writing, this probably won't appeal to you. It's written in a very chronological sense and doesn't build drama the way a captive narrative should. Again, I'm not faulting it for that, I'm just saying it's a completely different type of book than I think some readers are looking for. That said, I do take issue with several "facts" in the book, simply because I am very familiar with the roads, people's names, and other miscellaneous information from the area. Whether they were typos or deliberately changed or just shoddy research, there are several inaccuracies within this book. For example, the author references intersections that don't actually exist, sites someone's name as "Jan" when it should be "Jay", and mislabels simple landmarks. With such small and maybe insignificant details being messed up throughout the book, it casts some doubt in my mind about the author's effort and attention to details during the actual significant parts of the story. As this appears to be the only book written about these horrific events, I'll have to make do with this author's account and rate it as OK simply because I was compelled to read it in pretty much one sitting. However, if other books are conceived from this crime, I have a feeling the ratings of this book, by comparison, will certainly go down.

I found out things I hadn't known and had to take breaks often because we lived in Apple Valley when this happened. Well written, sensitive, respectful and most of the people in Knox County are caring, loving and helpful. Sheriff Barber retired. Sarah lives in Knox County with her husband and children. The home in Apple Valley, after extensive remodeling is now rented by a family hoping to make the house a home, not that place where unspeakable horrors took place.

This is a heartbreaking story about a twisted individual who brutally murdered three people, and kidnapped and raped a 13 year old girl. But more importantly is a story about a very courageous young lady who managed to survive the horrors.I found out to be a bit wordy, but all-in-all it was a well researched, good read.
