Dutifully cites Foucault and Derrida and their successors on post-modernism, but you can skip through that if you want to. The author's comparisons of Baby Boomer and Gen-X American Buddhist teachers are insightful and interesting. I was delighted to learn here about Natalie Quli's excellent Journal of Buddhist Ethics article "Western Self, Asian Other: Modernity, Authenticity, and Nostalgia for 'Tradition' in Buddhist Studies," available online at this writing.
Ann Gleig's work is highly informative in understanding the current state of the affairs of "modern Buddhism" as taking shape in the US. Very scholarly and highly informative. As a psychologist interested in both Buddhism and meditation, including "mindfulness" as a therapeutic tool, this book picks up where Jeff Wilson's Mindful America left off. I recommend this book to any serious student in Buddhism and "mindful therapy."
