This book is one of Carolyn Hart's best and shows why the Mystery Writers of America named her a Grand Master. As usual, the book begins with short vignettes that show possible motives while introducing key characters. The mystery plot is carefully developed from there to the exciting dénouement that exposes the true murderer. As always, the author is on point with showing how evil can inhabit anyone, allowing the villain to justify his or her actions in a cold-blooded fashion with twisted logic. Ms. Hart does such a good job explaining the characters, we can almost feel sympathy for both the victim and the murderer, and most certainly for the innocents damaged by their actions. Along the way the reader enjoys life on an Atlantic barrier island during the Fourth of July holiday, with the usual main characters being provided with good reasons for going on their search for the killer, not avoiding police involvement but enhancing the official investigation. The only thing I couldn't quite figure out is why the author sent three main characters, "The Intrepid Trio," off on a cruise during most of the book. It does allow her to show an interesting way of integrating new technology into the plot. One of the best scenes involves an old fashioned telephone booth, making its anachronistic existence an important part of the climax.Publishers of late seem to have missed out on how much most mystery readers enjoy renewing our relationship with known characters like Max and Annie with each book in a continuing series. And Carolyn Hart does an excellent job of making sure each book is unique while also showing the progression of Annie and Max's rapport, inviting the reader to accompany them on this and many other well-crafted and excellent adventures. I look forward to future visits with Max and Annie and other friends on Broward Rock.
Max and Annie Darling have got to be one of the most delightful couples in literature. Their relationship is maturing nicely, Laurel doesn't get on Annie's nerves so much and Agatha continues to bite the hand that feeds her. All this and murder afoot at Broward's Rock. Get ready to head to your local Pavorotti for a fried Oyster Sandwich on a bun before you settle in with this adventure. Well developed characters and nice resolution. Don't believe all that you hear and settle in for a very satisfying vacation at our favorite place.
Carolyn Hart can't write a bad book. Her mysteries are always interesting and the couple Annie and Max Darling are real and charming and fun. Carolyn must be so smart. I love her ghost series a lot too. Don't miss any of her books. They make a day fly by and then you want to read the next one. I have loved the Death On Demand series ever since I discovered it many years ago. I just hope I die before MS Hart does.
I enjoy all of the Death on Demand series and will continue to buy each new one. I enjoyed how the murderer was confronted and found this very original. I was troubled by praise for one of the characters at the end of the book even though he broke the law and did a horrible thing. I hadn't noticed Max calling his mother "Ma" before and found this annoying for some reason. Maybe I missed this in previous books. For some reason it seemed jarring in this one. Does seems like the books are starting to follow a formula and the reader can predict some of the story.
Another great Death on Demand story from Carolyn Hart. Annie and Max are the perfect couple and when joined by the intrepid trio, they make a wonderful cast of wit, humor and deduction. I love the way Carolyn Hart can weave so many people into her plots. She takes care to lay out where everyone was, what they were doing . . .you got to travel along with the way Annie's mind works. A fun read and great caper.
For just about the first time ever, I was not terribly keen on a Carolyn Hart book. I don't know; maybe it was just a time when I wasn't in the right frame of mind to deal with all the mediocre twists and complicated alibis & convoluted story line. I was just plain bored by the time I FINALLY reached the ending.
Great series
I have read this series for as long as I can remember. It is getting a bit tiresome, however. I enjoy the premise and the characters but it seems there is nothing new in Browards Rock. I'm committed to the series and will read them all but this was less enjoyable than the others.
