If you want to learn how to use Mathematica this book is for you. The descriptions and instructions are very clear. If you are familiar with Mathematica, the book will widen your horizons. It is a great mix of general and particulars. It covers all aspects of Mathematica. The program has very good documentation and the book gives an excellent framework to use it. The editorial work is excellent, important rules are edited clearly, the paper, print, figures, are of very high quality. The binding is solid and will not disintegrate after one reading. It is very well worth the price.
This covered a lot of the new functionality of Mathematica, but in some of the examples, it failed to use functionality which could have made the solutions easier to follow. For instance, (I may be wrong on this), I believe that the entity-based system is meant to phase out many functions with names matching "*Data". This is not reflected in the examples. Also, the examples using Compartment Models could have benefited from the state variable modeling functionality.
yikes what a book.. to use this book be prepared to do some work.. the problems are better defined than you will find in real life... good book..

I found the book extremely useful for getting familiar with the latest versions of Mathematica (versions 8-11) and the Wolfram Language, its programming language. I specially liked the way the chapters introduce the relevant Mathematica functionality and then shows you how to put it in action solving problems.Regarding the actual contents, here are my impressions:Chapters 1 to 3 cover how to get started with the program, perform basic data analysis, manipulate lists and learn to program including cloud deployment and package development. I specially enjoy section 2.5 where the author shows how to import historical energy data in Excel from the internet and analyze energy consumption.These first 100 pages will give you a very solid foundation of the program's capabilities and its underlying principles, specially the power of functional programming, patterns and rules. If you read them carefully, you'll be well on your way toward Mathematica mastery!Chapter 4 deals with how to create interactive applications using the Manipulate command and has plenty of examples related to image processing, networks and mathematics among others.Chapter 5 introduces the notion of computable data and how you can access huge amounts of information from many different fields such as astronomy, biology, economics, engineering, geography, linguistics, mathematics and physics among others. The chapter teaches you how to get the data, visualize them and perform calculations.Chapters 6 to 11 discuss how Mathematica can be used for probability, statistics, math, astronomy, nuclear physics, biokinetics and economics and finance. It does that by using the program to solve problems such as calculating the probability of an election tie, fitting experimental data, performing cluster analysis, determining the color of the stars, dating the history of humankind, solving ICRP models in biokinetics or optimizing a supply chain. This section of the book is quite impressive in terms of the breadth and depth of some of the topics discussed specially the ones related to biokinetics in chapter 10.Finally, chapter 12 talks about grid computing, CUDA, webMathematica and Wolfram Workbench, an IDE for programming in Mathematica. As far as I know, this is the only book that has put all the information related to these topics in one dedicated chapter. The instructions provided for getting grid computing and webMathematica up and running are particularly useful and easy to follow.
