Nick Albert and his wife, Lesley’s, adventures as they relocated to Clare County, Ireland from England kept me laughing through much of the book! I so enjoyed Nick’s observations and descriptions of the people he dealt with (Both British and Irish) and the ins and outs of purchasing a rural farmhouse. He started the process from his native England and ended inside his host country, Ireland.The best part for me were Nick's characterizations! It hit me that Nick constructed his tales with the same enthusiasm he used to make the repairs to his house and property—that is, with a bit of elbow grease, ingenuity and in a “robust size†to clearly bring his experiences to life. Filtered through a unique lens of humor, of course.If you’re an animal and nature lover, have an interest in expatriate life, local culture, and rural Ireland, I highly recommend this book to you!
"Fresh Eggs and Dog Beds" by Nick Albert is a thoroughly enjoyable book from beginning to end. Nick and his wife Lesley decide that they must escape the stressful rat race of working and living in England, if Nick's health has any chance to recover. Almost at a whim they decide to relocate to rural Ireland and begin looking for a farmhouse where they can begin to simplify their life. Nick's story, full of humour, takes us through their search for the ideal property. He has a great talent of letting the reader see the beauty of the Irish countryside, getting to meet with all the great characters along the way, letting us experience the ups and downs of beginning to renovate their lovely, but much in need of tender loving care farm house. This is a very refreshing read. He embraces his chosen country with open arms and open mind and shares with the reader his love for nature and his beloved dogs. I really can't imagine anyone not enjoying it. Looking forward to the next installment.
Nick Albert's story of their move to Ireland is an enjoyable read. The author clearly lays out their reason for giving up his job and relocating to Ireland in search of a calmer way of life. Unfortunately there was no easy straight forward way in finding their ideal peaceful spot away from the crowds. Nick's lovable sense of humour softens the stresses and strains they faced in finding their ideal home. The book was written when Ireland was in its EU "Tiger" hey day and thus a little bit out of date, but this does not really detract from the interesting story of getting away from it all. I highly recommend this book to those looking for a light and humourous personal account of a major life changing decision. Read on Kindle.
This is a well written book and entertaining but it did seem slow, as by the end of it they had only just moved to Eire and the promised story hadn't really started. Still its one way to spin it out into another book I suppose.
Nick and Lesley are fed up with the fast paced life in the UK and set out looking for other countries to make a new life in. They decide on Ireland and set out to make it their new home and soon find out the quirkiness of the Irish way, which both frustrates and pushes them harder to make it all happen. Nick Alberts' writing is humorous and easy flowing. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative read for anyone wanting to visit, move or just armchair travel.
I wish Mr. Albert had written this book back when we visited Ireland the first time. My Wife’s family is from County Mayo so we spend a majority of our time when visiting Ireland in Mayo and Clare. Fresh Eggs and Dog Beds brings out the flavor and charm of the people of the Wild Atlantic Way. One section I did not like was his stereotypical fat American tourist getting stuck in a passageway in Bunratty Castle otherwise its a good albeit slow read. Now an addition to my review, my Wife is reading it now, I know when she's reading it when I hear her laughing.
We all have to take stock of our lives at some point and make decisions about making a change. In Nick's case, it was a big change and one that required a whole new view of daily life as he knew it. A new life in Ireland. This is an easy book to read and enjoy, and if you have ever bought a fixer upper you too will find yourself chuckling in agreement. Just can't wait for Part II.
Enjoyed reading his journey to realizing (his Dr advised as such)) that if he did not do something soon-he would be going to an early grave. This first book deals with the experience they had of online research, followed by the actual trips to attempt to physically inspect the properties , and the eventual purchase of what sounds like a unique location. I have just started this very week on Book 2.
