About the Author
Sandra Duran Wilson comes from a family of artists and scientists. She grew up in a world where all things were possible in her imagination. It was a world where she could look through the microscope in her father's office and paint what she saw. Her early years were spent on the border of Mexico where the people, animals, landscape, music, culture and the stories of the curanderos shaped her reality. Years later she would return frequently to Mexico and South America to absorb the culture, traditions and art. Her spirituality combined with her scientific studies directed her work from realism to abstraction. Her work is influenced by scientific concepts in physics, chemistry and biology. The pure fun of exploring what paint can do and her natural curiosity keeps the work fresh and lively. She is continually exploring new surfaces, materials and techniques. Her work is represented in galleries in the U.S. and Australia and is found in corporate, civic and educational institutions and private collections globally. She experiments, paints, writes and teaches at her studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She also teaches around the U.S., Europe and Australia. Sandra Duran Wilson's book "Awakening Your Creative Soul" can do just that! Awaken and reach your artistic soul.I recommend that any reader of this wonderful book delve into a lesson and go with the flow of what it has to teach you. I have loads of art books but this one is quite different. When I first thumbed through it, a series of pages grabbed me immediately and I was compelled to try the process described. This book is jam packed with not only the art exercises but most importantly, in my view, the mind exercises. I have learned a great deal about exploring numerous materials from this author in videos and her other books in the past, but to learn ways to access one's inner muse is essential to getting the most out of creative efforts. And I believe that is a key part to the magic of this book. Within the first paragraph of most of the chapters is a key sentence describing the mind or "soul" exercise, if you will, that the particular exercise embodies. Most art instruction books are about the materials and the "how to," but ignore the exploration of ways to access one's muse more easily. This is the first book I have read which pulls your being, your heart and your inner messages to the forefront so you can create directly from them and make your artful expressions truly your own. I am currently losing myself in her book a chapter at a time, and am finding that it's inspiration is well worth the journey....my artwork has become richer and conveys more depth than ever before.
I was eager to receive this book, the latest offered by Sandra Duran Wilson. With this book as with her previous books, Sandra offers technique suggestions with beautiful photos as well as all materials to achieve similar results. This book is split into 52 weeks of entries and projects meant to inspire creativity. Projects are mostly mixed media, many requiring supplies not everyone would have on hand. This can make them cost prohibitive. The style of this book didn't suit me well, but may be a good fit for someone else.Thank you to Sandra Duran Wilson, F+W Media, North Light Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I've enjoyed all of Sandra's previous books, but her latest, Awakening Your Creative Soul takes the cake! Each project in this book (and there are TONS of them) results in a fun and interesting hand made item. Yet what a surprise! It's not just about painting but about using your creativity to enhance quality of life. Duran Wilson connects art with life in this book, a challenging task she achieves brilliantly. I started thumbing through to find some techniques I like, but found myself reading it fully and couldn't put it down. Now I'm going through it again but this time following along to do each project in the mystical order presented. The connections to spiritual, mental, and creative are both fascinating and potent. This book is for all creatives that want to connect their ideas with a deeper vision. It is more than an art tutorial as it is a heart and soul guide.
