Yeah, I was a little put off by the mystical name and cultish icon, but this method of discerning someone's personality, their gifts, and the reasons for their "favorite sin" has POWER.Dating back to the Desert Fathers, it helps reveal the "true" self over against the "false", or "shadow", self. Myers-Briggs and StrengthsFinder 2.0 are helpful, but this is NECESSARY.Richard Rohr writes, "[...] the Enneagram shows us, among other things, the dark side of our gifts. [...] people are are destroyed by their gifts and talents. We are destroyed by our gifts because we identify too closely with what we can do well. Once we were told that we were destroyed by our sins. That's true, but the issue is more subtle."That rang true with me at a deep level...He went on, "We cling too much to what comes our way naturally." We spend the first thirty years of life developing an impression, a self-image that we fixate on. And by the time you're forty, this cultivated image is so ingrained that we "are literally prepared to go through hell just so we don't have to give it up. It determines most of what we do or don't do, say or don't say, what we occupy ourselves with and what we don't. We're all affected by it."Then he poses the ultimate existential question:"The question is: Do I have the freedom to be anything other than this role and this image."And the answer is Yes, you do, which Rohr spells out in the book. So do yourself, your spouse and family, your community... do us all a favor and READ the book.
Rohr and Ebert have written what I think is the best overall book on the Enneagram on the market. I have ready many. I think several of them are outstanding. Chestnut, Heuertz, Riso & Hudson, and Helen Palmer have all made tremendous contributions that I think are well worth reading. This book is my top pick for a few reasons. It will introduce you to the Enneagram if you're not familiar but its not a primer (see Cron & Stabile for a great intro book). Its not a book that focuses on all the valuable tangents of the enneagram such as wings, subtypes, and pathways for growth. It's the best overall book, that will give a clear and yet unapologetic understanding of the transformative value of the Enneagram.
A really great exploration of personality. it is accessibly written and the descriptions are super accurate. I love the in depth explorations and how it is all tied to the christian faith.
This is the full explanation of the Enneagram. I was surprised how much history and religion is behind this. I'm working with friends to improve our communications and relationships based on the information in this book. Also, I am an admirer of Richard Rohr and feel more confident about working on this program because he is a notable expert on Christian based writings to help find our true selves and thus be able to have deeper and more honest relationships with others.
I am glad to be exposed to this take on the Enneagram, but would not recommend it as a first source to anyone just beginning to learn about it. I have, for that purpose, enjoyed books by Riso and Hudson, who are more detailed, and, I would say, straightforward. Richard Rohr's book seems to me to be more his personal Roman Catholic Christian interpretation and application of the Enneagram's principles. I don't say I think he is *wrong;* in fact, I find his emphasis on our need to evolve beyond the types compelling. Although any basic intro to the Enneagram will speak of the underlying pain which has caused an individual to adopt the approach of a chosen type, Rohr (with an RC focus on suffering?) makes this central to his explication. Again, I don't think he's *wrong.* In fact, I find his thesis compelling that the talents we develop as we express our chosen type demonstrate how God "makes use of our sins." But if you are just learning about the Enneagram, I would recommend Riso and Hudson, who will provide more detail, and, I might imagine, more interest, in the first instance.
If you've ever wondered why you are a type A personality attracted to a type B personality and think you have it all figured out, you don't. This book is on a completely diffrent level and trumps any of the standardized personality-type tests. It speaks to the heart of who you are in a way that is surprising, revealing and shocking. You learn your "number" and begin to see certain pattersn unfold in your own personality. You also learn what other "numbers" you will get along with swimmingly and which ones might be challening. This is true in relationships whether it's a marriage or as the leader of a committee. It draws you deeper into the spiritual discipline of prayer and to begin to see the different areas that correlate to the life of Jesus. Get this book! Share it with your Bible study group, small group, spiritual formation group, your spouse, etc. My spouse and I learned A LOT about ourselves reading this book.
A fascinating look at the nine Enneagram types. Lots of details on each type as well as examples from the Bible. Deep and detailed while also being easy to follow and understand.
My first Enneagram Book, and it’s good. I was hoping there would be a copy of an enneagram test in the book, but there wasn’t, so I went online took a couple of the online inventories. I like the faith perspective that Richard Rohr writes from, And the diagrams in the book are very good for helping to understand the concepts as well as the assertions that the author makes.
