About the Author

Maria Walther is a first-grade teacher in Aurora, IL. She’s been spending her days with children since 1986. Along with teaching young learners, Maria inspires other professionals by sharing her knowledge at local, state, and national conferences. The ideas she shares reflect her continued commitment to teaching, researching, writing, and collaborating with her colleagues. Maria earned a doctorate at Northern Illinois University in 1998 was recently named The Outstanding Literacy Alumni by the Department of Literacy Education for professionalism, service, and career success. Maria has been a longtime advocate for reading aloud. She was honored as Illinois Reading Educator of the Year and earned the ICARE for Reading Award for fostering the love of reading in children. Before partnering with the Corwin team, she co-authored five professional books and the Next Step Guided Reading Assessment with Scholastic. Dr. Walther is highly dedicated to children and teachers. Her passion for helping teachers teach quality lessons is apparent in all of her professional books. However, this Ramped Up Read Aloud Book is by far the best! She has actually used each and every one of the books listed within and has given tried and true information and lessons. She has given the framework so teachers can use her information and tweak it based on age levels of children. Knowing she’s experienced these picture books cover to cover makes reading this Ramped Up Book a joy. I personally love that when I read about a particular picture book she has reviewed that ideas and activities come to mind because she’s laid the foundation for teachers to use and be creative based on the needs of his/her students. Thank you Maria and can’t wait to see what is in store next.

I have been avid in implementing Dr. Walther's lessons in my own classroom and know the satisfaction of, LITERALLY, all of my students being totally engaged! I love everything by Maria Walther and have been counting down the days for the release of this book! It did not disappoint! This book contains the latest and greatest in picture books to make your read aloud time a huge hit with your class. It is organized in a way that makes it a quick, grab and go resource for teachers. Ideas are easy to implement and are engaging for students. Ideas for differentiation are also included. This is my new go- to resource for my daily read aloud time.

I have not read this book cover to cover, but I have found that the layout makes it incredibly easy to use in the classroom. I already have several lessons tabbed to use in Writer's Workshop, and LOVE the picture book titles that have been included. The beginning lays out reasons for why read aloud is so vital to students, and the chapters are an easy to follow progression. Plus - there's spots for writing in your own ideas for books that could be used with the standards being taught. Another FABULOUS Dr. Walther book!

This is one of THE BEST professional books that I have purchased. It includes wonderful lesson plans for a variety of incredible read alouds. So easy to implement and give some oomph to my read alouds.
