About the Author
Larry Samovar, Emeritus Professor at San Diego State University, received his Ph.D. from Purdue University, where he taught for five years. He was also an invited scholar at Nihon University in Japan. As an early pioneer in the field of intercultural communication, he has been a guest speaker at many universities in the United States. In addition, Dr. Samovar has worked as a communication consultant in both the private and public sectors. He has written and/or edited 14 textbooks--totaling 45 editions. Many of his publications have been translated into foreign languages and are used in 11 countries. As an active researcher he has presented more than 100 scholarly papers and conducted numerous seminars and workshops at international, national, and regional conferences. His publication list is extensive and encompasses books and articles on intercultural communication, small group communication, interpersonal communication, and public speaking.

I bought this affordable 8th edition text to supplement the e-text of the 9th edition that I am renting for a course. Sometimes I want to highlight and have a physical text. This edition is very different from the 9th edition. It has been changed a lot - good info, but I do not recommend it as a replacement for the 9th edition if you need it for a college class.
Read this for an Intercultural Communications course. I had a difficult time reading the print because it is too small and blue ink on white paper, not black and white. The only way I could read it is if I were sitting in a nearly sunlit area or had a bright white light, like LED and/or a lighted magnifying lens/lamp. The OTT light worked well.The information was interesting though, just too difficult to read under normal circumstances.
Great overview of cultures and cultural communication. However, the chapters on religion are rife with errors. Just the Christianity section alone had some grave errors concerning Christian theology. Then I read the Judaism section and found out later that there was an error about the sacred texts.However, don't let that stop you from using this textbook. The other chapters are a wealth of quality information.
I don't usually like text books, but this one is an exception. I get addicted to reading the content because it is written in a language 'normal people talk'. It is not so advanced that you need to research each word and it flows very well. If I didn't rent this book, I'd want to keep it for my own library. It is truly informative in learning how to communicate with others from a different culture.
Rented this book in my college class. I decided to buy it after, because it was great in defining cultures, and there is no bias like other college course books. It is good to have on hand if you are wanting an overview of other culture's religions, history, motives, etc.
Though my college course only had went through 8 chapters of this, it was an interesting read. I did manage to read it even tho I had completed the course.College store wanted over 120$ for used.
Exactly as expected
Terrible with conflicting ideas in the same chapter they are presented. Book came in terrible condition. I had better expectations for a book that is supposed to encourage respectful manners of communicating between cultures, but instead inadvertently insults cultures based on its hasty generalizations about a culture and its people.
